Origin

Before Asterra had shape, the Celestial Deep was stirred by twelve primal forces. Sea and sky collided, earth rose, wind carved the first valleys, and the ideas of good, evil, balance, growth, and decay gained voices. Those voices became the Twelve. They shaped the mortal world together, then divided it through the first divine conflict, leaving each deity bound to a portion of existence.

Cosmology

Asterra rests upon the Worldshell, an ancient sphere of stone and root floating within the Celestial Deep. Above it turns the Crown of Winds, below it coils the Emberdark, and around it flows the Starless Sea. The gods emerged from the first collision of sea, sky, earth, wind, morality, and season. Their power reaches the mortal world through weather, dreams, harvests, beasts, omens, and direct manifestations.

Structure

The pantheon is arranged in four overlapping circles. The Crown includes Aurion, Brannoc, Elyra, and Seressa, the greater powers of sun, earth, life, and sea. The Turning includes Caelia, Eirwen, Solenne, and Thalen, who govern growth, winter, autumn, and the living wild. The Balance includes Veyr and Nymara, who contest law, fate, and mortal choice. The Ruin includes Morvane and Vaelor, destructive powers who remain part of the cosmic order even as they seek to break it. Temples commonly honor a primary deity while acknowledging at least two allied powers.

Mortal Relations

The gods remain visibly engaged with mortal life. They answer prayers through omens, dreams, weather, beasts, sacred sites, chosen champions, and rare physical manifestations. Clerics and paladins may serve one deity, a seasonal covenant, or a regional tradition honoring several gods. Mortal institutions often reflect divine tension: courts invoke Veyr, sailors invoke Seressa, forest communities invoke Thalen, and harvest towns celebrate Solenne while fearing Morvane.

Afterlife

The dead cross the Starless Sea aboard dream-worn vessels. A soul’s destination depends on the vows it kept, the wounds it healed, and the deity whose influence marked its life. Elyra opens the gates of renewal, Veyr judges oaths and treachery, and Morvane gathers those claimed by darkness. Souls tied to the seasons may return during their patron’s turning, reborn beneath a changed sky.
