Born from the first ancestral memories of the eldest clans, the Old Gods arose when mortals learned to fear winter, hunger, death, wild places, and the ungovernable power of flame, storm, and soil. The first sacrifices were made in desperation; the gods answered, and the bargain became the foundation of civilization.

At the beginning there was only the Shivering Dark, the Sea Below, the Sky Above, and the Root-Below, from which the Old Gods awakened as personifications of primal forces and ancestral memory. They are not creators in the forgiving sense; they are custodians of a world that exists because it is continually fed. Every harvest, battle, oath, and funeral renews their dominion, and each sacrifice is a rope tying mortal society to the wrathful order beneath the stones.

A loose but ancient hieratic cycle bound by seasonal rites rather than centralized dogma. Each god holds a shrine-domain, a priestly caste, and a calendar of offerings, but the cults meet at sacred councils of stone to negotiate sacrifice quotas, omens, and feud boundaries. The religion is less a church than an arrangement for surviving the wrath of the world.

Mortal societies survive by appeasing the Old Gods with seasonal offerings, funeral rites, and public sacrifices of grain, blood, fire, and treasure. Priests serve as judges of tribute and keepers of taboo, while common people accept that prosperity, victory, and healing are never free. Temples are often little more than stone circles, sacred wells, hearth-altars, and burial mounds watched by grim custodians who know that neglect invites famine, war, and misfortune.

The faithful are not promised comfort. The dead are taken to the Hollow Mounds, a bleak ancestral underworld where names are remembered as debts and offerings are sorted by the worth of their sacrifices. Those who fed the gods well may return as storm-ghosts, hearth-shades, or raven-omens to haunt their bloodlines; those who withheld tribute are ground into the peat-dark silence beneath the earth.
