The Court of Nine
Origin
The pantheon arose from an early age of wandering city-states that each claimed a different virtue for survival in a vast, remote world. Over centuries, those local gods were woven into a single faith when priests discovered that the heavens answered in a shared pattern of nine aligned voices, each answering one moral direction and one mortal need.
Cosmology
The world is imagined as nine far-flung paths radiating from a dim central star known as the Still Hearth. Each deity claims a horizon, a threshold, or a season of the soul rather than a physical planet or throne. The heavens are not near; prayers rise like signals across impossible distances, and divine answers arrive as signs, omens, and rare miracles that feel more like echoes than direct speech.
Structure
A ninefold clergy mirrors the pantheon: sun-priests of Aurelion, ledger-keepers of Veyra, hearthwardens of Elaris, night-cantors of Nocthyr, road-seers of Thren, verdict-bearers of Kharzun, ember-heralds of Pyria, shadow-brokers of Sable Nemm, and ruin-choristers of Orvax. There is no central pope; instead, conclaves are held at great intervals, and because the world is distant and broad, each temple order develops local customs while preserving the ninefold names.
Mortal Relations
Mortals are regarded as brief, distant flames seen from a divine height: important enough to guide, judge, tempt, shelter, or extinguish, but never close enough to fully possess. The faith teaches that the gods do not walk among mortals often; instead, they send omens across great distances, and clergy become the practical hands of divine will.
Afterlife
The dead pass beyond the Veil of Nine Courts, where each soul is first weighed at the Far Threshold by the Silent Judge. From there, the worthy are sent to one of the lower halls tended by the lesser gods, while the rare souls who perfectly embody a deity's ideals are received into the high, distant dominions of the two Greater powers. Most spirits do not remain whole for long; the distant tone of the cosmos means memories thin like mist, and even the gods speak of mortal lives as brief lantern-flashes seen from a mountain road.
