The Opening

The corpses buried beneath Rome's streets have begun to rise, and each one carries a military order bearing your name. Legate Aelia Varro says only you can cross the land beyond the gods, recover the lost imperial treasury, and free the imprisoned god of death. If you fail, every enemy Rome has ever buried may return before dawn on the third day.

Set the Scene

The adventure opens in a sealed military archive beneath a Roman frontier garrison. Corpses wrapped in emergency blankets twitch behind iron doors while Legate Aelia Varro presents Perseus with a cracked coin, a bloodstained expedition map, and a final order signed in his own handwriting. Marek and Nerissa are already waiting, each carrying a relic that should have been lost with the original expedition. When the party touches the coin, every lamp goes out and a doorway opens onto a starless plain.

Stakes

If the god of death remains imprisoned, the dead will continue rising and eventually overwhelm Rome. If the imperial gold returns to Rome unchanged, its soul-bound nature may create a permanent source of undead power. If Perseus fails to reclaim his memories, Cassian's version of the expedition becomes the official history.

Ticking Clock·The party has three days before the Null March fully overlaps with Roman territory. At the end of each major scene after the first, advance the breach. On the third day, undead armies begin emerging in Rome.

Background Lore

Rome's newest frontier is not a province but a wound in reality. Beyond the gods lies the Null March, a dead expanse where divine authority fails, memories become currency, and the borders between life and death have collapsed. Perseus once led an imperial expedition there, recovered a vast cache of lost Roman gold, and betrayed his companions by sealing the road behind him. The gods erased his memory as both punishment and protection. Now the god of death has been imprisoned in the Null March, and every slain enemy buried under Roman law is beginning to rise.

What the World Knows

Perseus has been ordered to travel beyond the reach of the gods, where the imprisoned god of death is held in a land called the Null March. The god's absence has caused the slain to rise, and the crisis will spread into Roman territory unless the party frees him. The journey also offers a chance to recover an imperial treasury lost during Perseus's previous expedition, allowing him to prove that he never betrayed Rome.
