The Opening

For three nights, a bell has rung beneath Brackenwold, though no bell tower stands there. Each toll is followed by a tremor, a burst of blue light, and a voice from underground calling someone in the village by name. Reeve Mara Vell offers payment to find Grimsold Krummkamm, the bellwright who vanished years ago, and learn what is waking below.

Set the Scene

The adventure begins in Brackenwold's rain-darkened meeting hall. Reeve Mara Vell has placed a cracked piece of black bell-metal on the table. As she explains the situation, a deep toll rolls beneath the floor, dust falls from the rafters, and Orren Pike suddenly answers a voice that no one else can hear. The voice says, "Orren, bring them below." Mara asks the party to leave immediately before the next tremor brings down the old mine entrance.

Mara Vell

Mara Vell summons the party to the meeting hall after the latest tremor. She is direct, exhausted, and visibly afraid of what the townsfolk will do if the truth becomes public. She offers half the reward immediately and promises the rest if the party prevents further deaths.

Stakes

If Heartwake completes its awakening sequence, the dead beneath Brackenwold will rise, the failing vault will collapse, and the settlement will be destroyed. If the party saves only the surface settlement, the buried refuge may be lost. If they save both, they must expose a dangerous truth and decide whether the ancient dead should ever be awakened again.

Ticking Clock·Heartwake rings once after each major delay, major failure, or completed scene. After the sixth toll, the vault begins its irreversible awakening. The GM can shorten or lengthen the clock based on pacing, but the party should feel that every detour carries a cost.

Background Lore

Grimsold Krummkamm was once the master bellwright of the hill settlement of Brackenwold. He forged a great warning bell called Heartwake, said to ring whenever the dead walked beneath the earth. Years ago, Grimsold vanished after Heartwake cracked during a midnight vigil. Since then, miners have reported hearing the broken bell underground, followed by tremors, ghostly lights, and voices calling their names. The settlement now stands above a sealed dwarven transit vault whose forgotten machinery is beginning to awaken.

What the World Knows

Grimsold Krummkamm was Brackenwold's most gifted bellwright until a disaster in the old mine killed several workers and left Heartwake, his greatest creation, cracked beyond repair. Grimsold disappeared soon afterward. Now the bell is ringing again beneath the settlement, and the dead may be stirring. The party must descend into the abandoned mine, find Grimsold, and stop whatever is causing the disturbances before Brackenwold is destroyed.
