Tormented Treant Spirit

Harrowroot Ashenbloom

0·Agender, traditionally referred to with they or it pronouns·Large
Neutral, corrupted by grief and increasingly punitive

Species

Treant spirit

Appearance

Harrowroot resembles a narrow, elderly treant spirit assembled from a lightning-split ash tree, a humanlike skeleton of roots, and drifting curtains of translucent leaves. Its bark is rough enough to catch cloth, yet small patches feel warm and smooth like a sleeping animal. One arm ends in a five-fingered branch, while the other remains a delicate cluster of rootlets that constantly combs through the soil. Pale mushrooms grow along its ribs and open whenever it becomes angry. It moves with a slow, creaking sway until something threatens the clearing, at which point it crosses the ground in sudden, insectlike jerks. The contradictory impression is unmistakable: it looks ancient and monstrous, but it carefully shelters tiny moths beneath its bark and blushes green when praised.

Height11 feet when fully upright, though it usually stoops to 8 feet
BuildTall, crooked, and partially hollow, with the wiry structure of a dead tree that refuses to fall
EyesDeep amber lights, each surrounded by rings of pale green fungus
HairLong streamers of gray lichen and copper leaves
SkinCharcoal-gray bark veined with amber sap and soft green moss

A low, creaking voice layered with whispers like wind passing through dead branches. In anger, individual words crack like splitting wood.”

Distinguishing Features

A vertical scar of blackened sap splits its face from brow to rootlike jaw.

White moths emerge from its chest cavity when it uses supernatural abilities.

Its left hand is made of fine rootlets that can write names in soil.

A child-sized blue ribbon is tied around one ankle.

Fresh green leaves grow from wounds, while old wounds produce gray ash.

Voice

A dry, resonant rasp that sometimes becomes the voice of a frightened child when Harrowroot says Nessa's name.

Clothing

A ragged mantle of woven nettles, funeral ribbons, old prayer strips, and strips of blue cloth taken from travelers who once sought shelter in the clearing

Body Language

Harrowroot leans toward speakers as if listening through the ground. Its branches fold inward when uncertain and spread wide when enraged. Tiny roots tap beneath its feet whenever it is lying. When it feels genuine affection, a single white flower opens in the hollow of its chest.
