Katsu Gekai is a compact, weather-hardened human with a face made sharp by salt, sleeplessness, and old arguments. His skin is copper-brown and rough across the knuckles, while his black hair is kept in a short, uneven tail tied with red sail thread. He moves with a sailor's rolling balance even on level ground, turning his shoulders before his feet as if expecting the deck to tilt. A pale scar crosses his lower lip, but his smile is unexpectedly gentle and almost shy. He smells faintly of cedar oil, pepper, and wet rope. The contradictory impression he leaves is that of a dangerous man who looks most at home while carefully mending a child's torn mitten.
