Varkesh Azkhar, Keeper of the Closed Eye
Dark Runespeaker
Varkesh Azkhar, Keeper of the Closed Eye
Species
Black Dragonborn
Appearance
Azkhar is a tall black dragonborn whose scales resemble polished coal veined with faint silver cracks. His horns have been filed into blunt ceremonial hooks, then capped with tiny iron rings that chime whenever he turns his head. He moves with measured precision, placing each foot as though following invisible courtroom tiles. His armor is severe black plate, but beneath it he wears a surprisingly delicate robe of dark violet silk embroidered with tiny scenes of ordinary village life. His crimson eyes rarely widen, and his breath carries the sharp scent of vinegar, hot metal, and rain on stone. The contradictory impression is unmistakable: he looks like a war machine dressed for execution, yet his hands are immaculate and almost tender when handling books, flowers, or children's toys.
“His voice is low, dry, and resonant, like a verdict spoken inside a stone vault. He pronounces every consonant carefully and rarely uses contractions.”

Distinguishing Features
Silver cracks run across the scales of his left cheek, remnants of a ritual that nearly killed him.
The tip of his right horn is missing and has been replaced by a black iron cap.
His shadow sometimes points toward the nearest exit even when the light comes from another direction.
A tiny child's paper bird is always tucked inside his breastplate.
His acid breath smells faintly of crushed green apples.
Voice
“A restrained baritone with a faint rasp, carrying the authority of a courtroom and the fatigue of someone who has spent years arguing with ghosts.”
Clothing
Blackened half-plate over a dark violet silk robe, a high collar reinforced with iron scales, fingerless gloves marked with legal runes, and a long ash-gray mantle clasped by a silver seal depicting a closed eye
Body Language
Azkhar stands unnaturally still while others speak, with his hands folded over the pommel of his sword. When angered, his tail coils tightly around one ankle and the iron rings on his horns begin to tremble. He leans closer when someone lies, not farther away. In rare moments of affection, he lowers his head until his horns nearly touch the other person's shoulder.
