Varkun Ashvein
Exiled Kharbal Runesmith
Varkun Ashvein
Species
Kharbal
Appearance
Varkun is a broad, compact Kharbal with the dense, stone-heavy posture of someone shaped by a lifetime at the forge. His skin has a dark iron hue, textured like cooled slag, with thin coppery cracks glowing beneath it whenever his temper rises. His beard is braided into seven uneven cords, each tipped with a tiny blacksmith's charm, though one braid has been burned completely away. He moves with deliberate economy, never wasting a gesture, but his left hand twitches in quick, birdlike motions when he is thinking. His hands are callused, scarred, and permanently stained with red-gold metal dust. The contradictory impression he leaves is that of a brutal furnace given a careful, almost gentle face, because he handles fragile objects with extraordinary tenderness.
“Measured and low, with a rasp like tongs dragged across an anvil. He pauses before important words as if weighing them in a furnace, and his rare laughter sounds like a coal fire collapsing inward.”

Distinguishing Features
Copper-colored cracks beneath the skin of his neck and hands glow during moments of stress.
One beard braid is missing, burned away during the Furnace Collapse.
His left eye contains a tiny rotating rune instead of a visible pupil.
A black iron ring around his thumb is fused to the bone.
His shadow sometimes moves a heartbeat after he does.
Voice
“A dry baritone with the steady cadence of a craftsman explaining a dangerous process. When the breach speaks through him, a second voice echoes half a syllable behind his own.”
Clothing
A soot-black leather apron layered over a charcoal wool coat, reinforced gloves, iron-toed work boots, and a red scarf woven with heat-resistant wire. His belt carries rune tablets instead of ordinary pouches.
Body Language
Varkun stands squarely and rarely fidgets in public, but his fingers constantly trace invisible rune strokes against his thumb. When threatened, he leans toward danger instead of away from it. When genuinely afraid, he becomes unnaturally still, like a cooling ingot.
