Appearance
Maku is a tall, dark-skinned man with the rangy strength of someone who has hauled stone, climbed ravines, and slept in armor more often than in a bed. His left arm is missing from just above the elbow, and his left eye is covered by a square of red-dyed wool stitched directly to a leather strap. He smiles almost constantly, showing one chipped lower canine, but the smile never reaches the surviving eye. His movements are economical and oddly quiet for a man of his size. He turns his whole torso instead of merely looking over his shoulder, and he balances with the careful grace of a mountain goat. His hair is black, tightly curled, and threaded with gray, usually bound at the nape with copper wire. The unexpected contradiction is that his hands, face, and clothes are scarred and travel-worn, yet he keeps one tiny white flower tucked behind his ear whenever he enters a town.
“Maku speaks in a low, dry voice with a steady rhythm. He uses short sentences during danger and elaborate courtesy during negotiations.”

Distinguishing Features
Missing left arm above the elbow.
Missing left eye covered by a red wool patch.
A constant, unnerving smile with one chipped canine.
White mountain flower tucked behind his ear.
Copper wire woven through his graying curls.
A black salt scar running from his left temple to his collarbone.
Voice
“Low, dry, and warmly controlled, with a roughened laugh that appears at the worst possible moments.”
Clothing
A dark wool tunic beneath layered leather scale, a weather-stained crimson sash, wide charcoal trousers tucked into high riding boots, and a sleeveless blue-gray cloak clasped with a hammered copper disk. His missing-arm side carries a reinforced leather harness holding tools, maps, and a small buckler-shaped plate used to catch blows.
Body Language
Maku stands with his shoulders relaxed and his chin slightly raised, presenting his scarred side without apology. His smile remains fixed during danger, while his surviving hand becomes perfectly still. When he trusts someone, he leans close and touches his knuckles lightly to their shoulder. When he lies, he rubs the copper wire in his hair.
