Jax is a broad, weathered man with a silhouette like a toppled statue. His left eye is missing and sealed beneath a strip of black leather stitched directly into the skin, while his remaining eye is a pale iron gray that rarely blinks. His hands are enormous, scarred, and surprisingly delicate when turning journal pages. He walks with a slight dragging motion in his right leg, yet can explode forward with startling speed when violence begins. His beard is clipped close except for one long braid threaded with copper wire. He smells faintly of lamp oil, rain, and old paper. The unexpected contradiction is his voice and manner: despite his brutal reputation and hulking frame, he handles books with reverence and becomes visibly embarrassed when praised for his intelligence.
