Appearance

A sun-browned old man of five feet eleven inches, Mott carries his body in a permanent forward hunch, as if still walking beneath a pack that was taken off decades ago. His head is completely bald except for a narrow gray fringe above the ears, while his beard bursts outward in a wild, smoke-colored mass, full of burrs, bread crumbs, and tiny lengths of colored thread. His hands are broad, knotted, and permanently dark beneath the fingernails from years of leatherwork, axle grease, and soil. He walks slowly but never hesitates, planting his staff with exact, rhythmic taps. His face suggests exhaustion until he smiles, at which point he looks unexpectedly mischievous. The contradictory impression he leaves is of a frail man who somehow seems heavier than the room around him, like a loaded cart that has learned to stand upright.

Height5 feet 11 inches
BuildLong-limbed and heavily weathered, with a once-powerful frame narrowed by age, hard travel, and years of stooping over wheels and harnesses.
EyesClouded hazel with sharp amber flecks
HairWild iron-gray beard with a bald scalp
SkinDeep tan, leathery across the face and forearms, with sun freckles and pale scars from old harness accidents.

Low, rasping, and carefully paced, with a dry humor that arrives half a breath late. He speaks softly enough that people lean toward him, then makes his most important statements in an almost inaudible murmur.”

Distinguishing Features

A crooked nose that healed badly after a mule kicked him.

A pale rope-burn scar circling his left wrist.

The copper button from a missing child's coat tied around his wrist.

A beard threaded with bits of red and yellow yarn that he replaces according to his mood.

A persistent smell of sun-warmed leather, sage, and woodsmoke.

Voice

A worn baritone with a warm scrape beneath it, like gravel in a wooden box. He laughs suddenly and loudly, then looks embarrassed by the sound.

Clothing

A patched ochre wool coat, a sleeveless brown vest, loose linen trousers tucked into cracked riding boots, and a faded red sash holding a utility knife and a pouch of dried herbs. His coat is reinforced at the shoulders with old saddle leather. He wears a child's copper button on a cord around his wrist.

Body Language

Mott leans heavily on his staff in conversation, but when he hears a lie his weight shifts subtly onto the balls of his feet. He rubs his left thumb over a scar in his palm when worried. When angry, he stops hunching and stands almost straight, making him seem suddenly taller and far more dangerous.
