Appearance
Kestara is a narrow-shouldered young woman with a still, almost sculpted face and the unsettling poise of someone listening to a voice no one else can hear. Her skin is pale olive with faint gray undertones, like stone kept under moonlight. Her hair is black, thick, and cut unevenly at the jaw, with one long section hanging over her left shoulder in a stiff braid threaded with tiny iron beads. Her eyes are completely black at first glance, though candlelight reveals a thin ring of deep violet around each pupil. Heavy charcoal makeup surrounds them, deliberately smudged as if applied after crying. Her lips are painted matte black, but the color has worn away at the center from biting them. She moves with careful, economical steps, never quite shifting her weight where people expect. Despite her severe, funeral-dark appearance, she has a small collection of brightly colored glass buttons sewn into the inside of her coat, and she smiles with embarrassing warmth whenever children show her broken toys.
“Her voice is low, clear, and slightly breathy, with careful pauses that make ordinary statements sound like prophecies. She speaks softly when offering comfort and becomes almost musical when threatening someone.”

Distinguishing Features
A small sharpened scythe with a black ribbon tied around its handle
A pale crescent-shaped scar beneath her right eye
Tiny violet flecks visible in her black irises when she casts magic
A row of brightly colored glass buttons hidden inside her coat
A faint smell of rain on stone and extinguished candles surrounding her
Voice
“A low contralto with a dry, almost sleepy cadence. When her patron speaks through her, the voice gains a second undertone that sounds older, slower, and impossibly far away.”
Clothing
A fitted black mourning coat with a high collar, silver stitching, and a skirt layered over close-fitted trousers. Her sleeves are fastened with mismatched funeral pins. She wears scuffed black boots, fingerless gloves, dark stockings, and a narrow violet scarf hidden beneath the collar. The outfit resembles the severe fashion of a city goth youth, but every piece has been altered for movement and concealed pockets.
Body Language
Kestara holds her shoulders slightly forward as if protecting a small flame in her chest. She keeps one hand near the ribbon of her scythe and touches the iron beads in her braid when anxious. When someone mentions her sister, she becomes perfectly motionless. When she is genuinely happy, she rocks once on her heels before remembering to stop.
