Key Personas

Joren Pell
Joren is conscientious with numbers and reckless with people. He is gentle toward animals, children, and anyone visibly frightened, yet becomes controlling when he believes someone is withholding information. In public he tries to look methodical and adult, correcting dates and routes with pedantic precision. In private he is superstitious, sleepless, and prone to arranging objects into pairs so he can reassure himself that nothing has vanished. He can show startling tenderness toward Ndomo one moment, then accuse the dealer of murder the next. His rage is real, but it is threaded with shame and an almost childlike hope that someone older and wiser will finally tell him what happened.

Odrin Marr
Odrin is compassionate in immediate crises and ruthless about long-term risk. She will kneel in filthy water to save a stranger, then calmly falsify a report if she believes the truth would cause riots. With strangers she is patient, almost tender. With friends and family she becomes controlling, demanding that they follow plans she refuses to explain. In public she projects measured certainty. In private she is restless, superstitious, and furious at how often survival requires choosing which people receive the truth. When frightened, she becomes bureaucratic. When grieving, she becomes unexpectedly funny.

Pellan Rusk
Pellan is courteous without being warm, generous with information when it costs him little, and startlingly cruel when someone threatens the structure that protects him. In public he is polished, patient, and legally precise. With frightened people he becomes almost tender, because he knows exactly how authority feels from the wrong side of a door. In private he is suspicious, sleepless, and prone to rehearsing conversations that already happened. He admires honest people but finds their honesty dangerously inefficient. He wants to believe that controlled corruption is better than open collapse, yet he is increasingly disgusted by the bargains that keep him safe.
