Species

Appearance
Mavulani is a broad-shouldered human man whose movements are unexpectedly quiet for his size. His skin has the deep brown sheen of oiled walnut, marked by pale rope burns around his left wrist and a small crescent scar beneath his lower lip. His hair is tightly coiled and shaved close at the temples, with the longer crown gathered into a short, uneven knot. One of his front teeth is capped in dull brass, not for ornament but to replace a tooth lost in a ferry accident. He walks with a measured, rolling balance learned from years on unstable decks, yet his hands are remarkably delicate when tying knots, mending nets, or tending injured birds. He gives the impression of a patient laborer until someone threatens a child, at which point his stillness becomes more frightening than anger.
“Low, measured, and unhurried. He speaks in short practical sentences, then adds a river metaphor when discussing motives, danger, or regret.”

Distinguishing Features
A brass-capped front tooth that catches the light when he smiles.
Pale rope scars circling his left wrist.
A habit of touching the river token at his belt before crossing water.
A small black heron feather sewn inside his cloak where only he can see it.
His enormous hands, which become unexpectedly gentle around injured animals and frightened children.
Voice
“A deep baritone with a soft rasp, like oars moving through wet wood. He lowers his voice rather than raising it when angry.”
Clothing
A faded indigo work tunic, sleeveless leather vest, loose river trousers, wrapped sandals, and a weatherproof cloak patched with sailcloth. His belt carries a small brass ferry token and a coil of red cord.
Body Language
He keeps his shoulders relaxed and his feet planted as if standing on a moving deck. When lying, he becomes excessively still. When truly angry, he begins folding and refolding a length of rope.
