Barnaby Otxal
Psionist, Seer of the Unveiled Path
Barnaby Otxal
Species
chromavaft
Appearance
Barnaby is a narrow-shouldered chromavaft man whose body seems to have been painted with diluted sunset colors and then rubbed nearly clean. His skin is mostly pearl-gray, but bands of copper, indigo, and green drift beneath it whenever he concentrates. His movements are economical and slightly delayed, as if he is following instructions received a heartbeat earlier. He has a long, thoughtful face, a flattened nose, and a left ear whose upper rim is translucent enough to show its fine inner veins. His hands are unusually broad and soft-looking, yet marked with old burn scars. The contradictory impression he leaves is that of someone fragile who is nearly impossible to surprise.
“Quiet, precise, and slightly breathless, with long pauses before names and conclusions. He sounds like a careful witness giving testimony, even when discussing ordinary matters.”

Distinguishing Features
Prismatic color ripples beneath his pearl-gray skin when he experiences strong emotion.
His left ear is translucent and crossed by visible blue veins.
Three fingertips on his right hand are permanently stained indigo from the warehouse fire.
His shadow sometimes appears to turn its head a fraction before he does.
He carries a cracked brass monocle that has no lens but helps him focus.
Voice
“A low, dry voice with a faint rasp, as though he has spent years speaking over wind and market noise. When using psionics, a second softer cadence seems to echo half a word behind him.”
Clothing
A salt-stained ochre coat sewn with narrow strips of mirrored glass, a sleeveless blue-gray tunic, wrapped trousers, soft leather boots, and a faded red scarf tied around his left wrist. The coat is patched with household cloth from people he has helped, including one bright pink square taken from his sister's old blanket.
Body Language
Barnaby keeps his chin angled toward the nearest reflective surface and rests two fingers against his staff when thinking. In danger, he becomes almost perfectly still, while his colors ripple rapidly beneath his skin. When lying, he smiles with only one side of his mouth and looks directly at the floor.
