Rurik Saltbraid
Ranger
Rurik Saltbraid
Species
Dwarf
Appearance
Rurik is a broad, weather-darkened dwarf whose skin has the rough texture of old teak near his knuckles and cheeks. His iron-gray beard is braided into five cords, each tipped with a tiny shell taken from a wreck he survived. He moves with a sailor's rolling balance, yet becomes unnervingly still when watching a horizon. His left ear is notched into the shape of a crescent moon. The unexpected detail is his delicate hands, long-fingered and careful, better suited to threading needles than swinging an axe, though they can strip and reassemble a crossbow in the dark.
“His voice is low, gravelly, and steady, with the resonance of stone chambers and the rough cadence of a deckhand calling through rain. He speaks plainly but chooses vivid nautical images when discussing danger.”

Distinguishing Features
A crescent-shaped notch in his left ear
Five beard braids tipped with wreckage shells
A pale scar crossing the bridge of his nose like a white rope
A brass compass lens embedded in the rim of his right goggle
A tattoo of a flooded mine shaft on his left palm
Voice
“A deep, weathered baritone with a faint rasp, like gravel dragged beneath a receding wave.”
Clothing
A sleeveless oilskin coat over layered blue-gray wool, reinforced trousers, coral-soled boots, fingerless gloves, and a faded red sash stolen from his first captain. Brass hooks and loops along his belt hold chalk, line, folded maps, shell markers, and tiny repair tools.
Body Language
Rurik keeps his shoulders angled toward the nearest escape route. He rests his thumb against the axe hook when suspicious, taps two fingers against his beard when calculating, and leans close when someone lies. In moments of genuine tenderness, he removes his gloves and folds them carefully in his lap.
