Marnie Vesk
Thief
Marnie Vesk
Species
Halfling
Appearance
Marnie is a small, hard-used halfling girl with dark brown hair cut unevenly around her ears, as if trimmed with a kitchen knife and impatience. Her green eyes are bright as bottle glass in a rubbish heap, always measuring hands, exits, and unattended food. She moves with a crouched, loose-kneed gait that makes her seem half asleep until she suddenly crosses a room like a thrown pebble. Her fingers are permanently darkened by soot and old ink, and one front tooth is capped with a tiny disk of polished tin. She wears the expression of someone expecting a blow, yet she laughs with an unexpectedly deep, booming laugh that sounds much too large for her body.
“Marnie speaks quickly, dropping the ends of words and turning statements into challenges. Her accent carries the clipped rhythm of market traders, with occasional soft consonants that echo the old halfling villages west of the river.”

Distinguishing Features
A tiny tin cap covers her front tooth.
Three white scars cross the back of her left hand in parallel lines.
Her quarterstaff has carved notches representing every child she has helped escape a beating.
She smells faintly of onion skins, lamp smoke, and wet wool.
She has an old brass key tied beneath her shirt on a thread of red yarn.
Voice
“A quick, low voice with a rough edge, as if every sentence has been whispered through a locked door. Her laugh is deep, sudden, and startlingly joyful.”
Clothing
A patched brown wool vest over a faded green shirt, a skirt made from two mismatched lengths of flour sack, striped stockings, and soft leather shoes with the soles partly cut away for quiet movement. A broad, cracked belt holds her dagger and several hidden loops of cord.
Body Language
Marnie keeps one shoulder turned toward the nearest exit and rests her thumb against the rim of her dagger sheath. When relaxed, she rocks on her heels and taps her staff against her boot in irregular little rhythms. When lying, she becomes perfectly still except for the tin cap on her tooth, which she worries with her tongue.
