Appearance

Hester is a weathered human woman whose face looks carved by wind, bad sleep, and years of judging people before they finish speaking. Her broken nose bends slightly left, giving her a permanent expression of skeptical attention. She walks with a rolling, careful stride, placing each boot as though the road might remember where she stepped. Her hands are broad, scarred, and unexpectedly gentle when handling keys, injured animals, or frightened children. A faded red scarf is tied around her left wrist, its fabric softened almost to silk by years of washing. She leaves an impression of contained weight, like a gate that has not yet decided whether to open. The contradictory detail is her smile, which is sudden, warm, and almost girlish when someone tells a truly terrible joke.

Height5 feet 5 inches
BuildCompact and powerfully built, with the dense shoulders and sturdy legs of someone accustomed to hauling barricades, climbing wet stairs, and standing through long watches.
EyesDeep hazel with amber flecks, usually narrowed in concentration
HairIron gray, cut to the jaw and usually pinned back with a plain copper clasp
SkinWeathered olive-brown with wind-reddened cheeks, pale knuckles, and fine lines around the eyes

Low, clipped, and deliberate, with a faint northern cadence. She rarely raises her voice because she has learned that quiet certainty makes people listen longer.”

Distinguishing Features

Broken nose bent slightly to the left.

Red scarf tied around the left wrist.

A pale burn scar across the right palm from the Flood Night grain-hall lock.

Missing tip of the left index finger.

A brass watch badge worn inside her coat instead of on the outside.

Voice

A low contralto worn rough by cold mornings and shouted commands, with a surprisingly soft warmth when speaking to children or animals.

Clothing

A dark brown watch coat patched at both elbows, a quilted gray gambeson beneath it, weatherproof trousers, knee-high riding boots, and a brass badge stamped with the old river-gate emblem. Her red scarf is tied around her left wrist rather than worn at her neck.

Body Language

Hester keeps her shoulders square and her chin slightly lowered, as if listening through the ground. She touches the red scarf when uncertain, turns her body toward exits, and rarely sits with her back to a door. When trust replaces suspicion, she leans forward and rests both hands on her knees.
