The Opening

The rift seals with a thunderclap of green light, yet the clearing fills with agonized cries. Four deer bound from the blackened underbrush, their antlers dripping ichor, while a towering treant spirit rises behind them with shadowed vines twisting around its limbs. Do you end their suffering, or defend yourselves against guardians who may still be capable of mercy?

Set the Scene

The last seam of the rift folds inward, leaving a circle of dim green light suspended above the earth. The air tastes of copper and wet stone, and every leaf trembles though no wind moves through the trees. Then four deer burst from the underbrush, their black-streaked fur smoking at the edges, while a colossal treant silhouette pushes up behind them, spectral vines tightening around its limbs as it gives a cry that shakes loose dead needles from the branches.

Stakes

The guardians' fate will determine whether the forest recovers from the sealed rift or becomes a spreading necrotic dead zone. Mercy preserves an ancient protector and prevents the remaining corruption from escaping, while violence ends the immediate threat but may damage the land and leave evidence of a larger conspiracy.

Ticking Clock·After the first attack, the clearing destabilizes over the next 12 rounds. At the end of each third round, necrotic sap spreads 5 feet, a tree collapses, or the treant gains a surge of spectral vines. If the party has not calmed or defeated the guardians by the end of the twelfth round, one surviving deer escapes and the residue begins spreading into the wider forest.

Background Lore

The sealed rift left a wound in the forest, its necrotic residue soaking into roots, beasts, and memory. Four deer were caught closest to the breach and transformed into violent guardians. The spirit of an ancient treant, already weakened by years of blight, now rises through the clearing to shield the warped herd, mistaking every living creature for an agent of the rift.

What the World Knows

After sealing a leyline rift, the party encounters four warped deer and the spirit of a tormented treant. The guardians attack because they are suffering and believe the party is connected to the breach. The characters can fight them, or attempt to calm them and end the corruption through mercy.
