The Opening

The Tideglass Beacon has gone dark, and ash is falling over the Ash Coast despite a clear sky. Boats vanish near Cinderhook while pale lights move beneath the waves. Harbor reeve Mara Venn offers you shelter, payment, and one desperate request: reach the lighthouse before the next high tide and relight it.

Set the Scene

The adventure begins in Cinderhook beneath a sky the color of old iron. Fine gray ash drifts across the harbor, settling on nets, rooftops, and the unmoving surface of the sea. Mara Venn meets the party at the end of the pier, where the dark outline of the Tideglass Beacon stands beyond the marsh. She explains that three boats vanished last night and that Old Nerris returned babbling about windows beneath the waves. Before the party leaves, a bell rings from the empty lighthouse, although the beacon has no visible flame.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn approaches the party publicly at the harbor after hearing they are capable travelers. She offers an advance payment and legal salvage rights to anything recovered from the lighthouse, but avoids explaining why the lighthouse was sealed from public access fifty years earlier.

Rumours

  1. 01
The lighthouse flame has been dark for three nights, but ships still see it burning beneath the waves.
  2. 02
The Ashen Choir sings from caves that can only be entered at low tide.
  3. 03
Old Nerris once served as the beacon keeper and refuses to look toward the lighthouse.
  4. 04
A drowned road appears on the beach after every ashfall.
  5. 05
The ruins beneath the coast were not destroyed by the sea. They were sealed there.
Stakes

If the party succeeds, Cinderhook and much of the Ash Coast survive, but the truth of the beacon may destabilize local politics. If they fail, the Ash Tide raises Veyr, destroys the harbor, and gives the drowned a permanent foothold on land.

Ticking Clock·The next high tide arrives at the end of the adventure. Allow approximately six to eight hours of in-world time. Delays, failed travel checks, prolonged fights, and negotiations that become deadlocked advance the tide and increase the danger of later scenes.

Background Lore

The Ash Coast is a scarred shoreline of black beaches, salt marshes, drowned roads, and villages built from the remains of old fortresses. For generations, coastal communities have relied on the Tideglass Beacon, an ancient lighthouse whose blue flame calms the violent currents and warns ships away from reefs. Three nights ago, the beacon went dark. Since then, ash has fallen from a cloudless sky, fishing boats have vanished, and pale lights have appeared beneath the surf. The coast is approaching the first Ash Tide in a century, when drowned ruins rise from the sea and everything buried there seeks a path inland.

What the World Knows

The Tideglass Beacon, the Ash Coast's ancient lighthouse, has gone dark. Without its protective light, violent tides and strange creatures threaten Cinderhook, while a secretive group called the Ashen Choir has been seen near the old drowned road. The party must reach the beacon, recover what was taken, and stop the coast from being swallowed by the rising Ash Tide.
