The City Beneath the Keep
The City Beneath the Keep
“In a starving border fortress, the only route to survival runs down into a dead city that was never truly dead.”

“Blackgate Keep is running out of food, soldiers, and time. Beneath the fortress lies a dead city older than the kingdom, and the scouting party that entered its ruins last night never came back. The commander needs brave souls to find them, recover proof of what lurks below, and return before the monsters learn the walls are weak.”

Commander Elira Thane meets the party in the fortress map room, where pins mark the shrinking perimeter and red string tracks disappearances into the ruin city. She points to a sealed gate beneath the keep and says the missing scouts found something under the old streets before their signal fire went out. She offers supplies, authority, and a grim promise: if the party does not go now, Blackgate Keep may not survive the week.

pragmatic and desperate, with military authority but genuine concern for the keep's people
Rumours
d5 · table- 01The old city bells still ring on foggy nights, though no hands touch them.
- 02Monsters avoid the central plaza as if something there is worse than they are.
- 03The missing scouts were last seen following a light that moved underground.
- 04Some fortress veterans refuse to speak about the foundations beneath the keep.
- 05A ruin-guide claims there is a safe stair, but it only appears after blood is spilled on the right stones.
If the party fails, Blackgate Keep may lose its outer patrols, its supply confidence, or the seal that keeps worse horrors buried under the ruin city. If they succeed, the fortress gains a vital breathing room, but also the burden of knowing the real danger has not been destroyed.
Background Lore
The border fortress of Blackgate Keep was raised generations ago inside the broken shell of Vhal-Kor, an ancient ruin city that predates the current kingdoms. Its walls are patched from scavenged stone and old imperial metal, and every night monsters prowl the avenues beyond the torchlight. Trade is failing, soldiers are thinning, and the fortress survives by stripping relics from the dead city before the ruins strip them in return.
Blackgate Keep has sent a scouting party into the ancient ruin city outside its walls, and the scouts have not returned. The commander hires the party to find them, learn what happened, and bring back any relics or intelligence that can help the fortress endure the monster-haunted border.
