The Opening

“At midsummer dusk, the village lanterns begin to go out one by one, and each flame leaves behind a tiny footprint in ash. Reeve Elsbeth Wren begs you to find a missing child before the fair goes dark and the woods come looking for a debt. The last lantern points toward a path that was not there this morning.”

Set the Scene

The midsummer fair is still in progress when the first lantern dies, then the second, and then a third across the square. Each extinguished flame leaves a little set of ash-prints on the hanging frame, as if something invisible had walked through the fire. Reeve Elsbeth Wren turns to you with a tremor in her voice and says, 'Please. Before the last light goes out, find my child and tell the woods we are willing to listen.'

Stakes

If the party fails, the village loses its child, its fair, and perhaps its right to travel safely through the woods. If they succeed, they expose a buried bargain that may protect Briarwood or curse it anew depending on how they handle the truth.

Ticking Clock·Every lantern that goes out shortens the night. When the final fair lantern dies, the Lantern King can manifest openly and claim payment before dawn.

Background Lore

In the Briarwood March, old folk still leave milk and bread on the stoops when the moon turns silver, because the paths between villages are watched by things that were once invited, and by things that never were. This year the lanterns of the midsummer fair have gone out one by one, and every snuffed flame leaves behind a tiny footprint in ash.

What the World Knows

A child has vanished from the midsummer fair, and the only clues are a trail of ash footprints and lanterns that keep burning out on their own. The villagers believe a fae predator has come for the young, and they hire the party to retrieve the missing child before night fully falls.
