The Opening

The stars over Woe have begun disappearing, one by one, and every missing star leaves behind a place where people remember lives they never lived. Ilyra Venn offers you a map that changes whenever someone nearby tells the truth. She says the first world-seal will fail before the next moonrise, and only those willing to enter the memory beneath it can prevent the end of everything.

Set the Scene

At Ilyra Venn's observatory, the party watches a star vanish. Every clock in the room stops at a different time, and a map of Woe redraws itself to show a black wound beneath the nearest settlement. Ilyra explains that the wound is not a location but a memory of a location, and that the party must enter it before the memory replaces reality. She gives them the Ashen Compass in an inert state and warns that it will point only toward truths someone is afraid to speak.

Ilyra Venn, the Last Cartographer

Ilyra Venn approaches the party in person after arranging for each character to receive a map fragment depicting a place they have never visited but somehow recognize. She asks them to meet at her observatory before the next moonrise. If they refuse, a star vanishes and the nearest town begins repeating the same day.

Stakes

If the party fails, the world-seals collapse in sequence. Woe will not simply be destroyed. Its history, identities, emotions, and physical geography will be rewritten by uncontrolled echoes, leaving scattered survivors in a world that no longer agrees on what has happened. If the party succeeds, the apocalypse is prevented but the old world cannot be restored unchanged.

Ticking Clock·The first seal fails at the next moonrise, approximately 18 hours after the opening scene. Each additional major seal failure shortens the remaining time and causes a new region of Woe to be rewritten. The GM may extend the clock when the party completes a major objective or sacrifices a valuable resource, and may advance it when the party abandons a crisis or allows an echo to escape.

Background Lore

Planet Woe was once stabilized by seven world-seals, each bound to a mortal virtue and opposed by a Greater Sin. When the first civilization attempted to destroy suffering itself, it divided the planet's collective pain into living echoes. The echoes became the Greater Sins, while the virtues that resisted them became rigid, wounded powers of their own. Now the seals are failing, memories are becoming physical, and entire regions are being rewritten by the emotions of the dead. The adventurers must investigate the failures, gather relics, recruit allies, and decide whether Woe should be restored, transformed, or allowed to end.

What the World Knows

The world-seals that protect Woe are failing. Across the planet, people are experiencing impossible memories, landscapes are changing according to collective emotion, and entities known as Greater Sins are appearing wherever a seal weakens. The adventurers are asked to investigate the first failure, recover the Ashen Compass, and gather enough allies and relics to prevent a chain reaction that could end civilization. They may face hostile echoes, frightened settlements, rival relic hunters, and difficult choices about whether the old order deserves to survive.
