The Opening

Mayor Rook begs for help before another night of losses empties the village pens. Something has taken residence in the old mill out in the marsh, and no one who goes there alone has come back with proof. Bring back the beast's head, or bring back a reason the hamlet can sleep again.

Set the Scene

As dusk settles over Briar Ford, Mayor Rook gathers a few lanterns in the square and points toward the marsh. 'One more dead animal tonight and tomorrow there will be no market, no travelers, no peace,' she says. From far off, beyond the reeds, comes the sound of something large dragging itself through water.

Rumours

d5 · table

The marsh lights have been seen circling the mill on moonless nights.
  2. 02
Old Tamm says the beast limps on one side, as if it was already wounded before it came here.
  3. 03
The reeve has been buying extra meat in secret and refusing to say why.
  4. 04
Children claim they heard someone singing from the mill after midnight.
  5. 05

Stakes

If the beast is not stopped, Briar Ford's trade collapses, the road goes silent, and more villagers may vanish into the marsh. If the hidden accomplice is exposed, the village must survive the shame and fear that follows.

Ticking Clock·By the third night of attacks, the hamlet will shutter its roads and abandon the outer farms, making the creature harder to track and the village harder to save.

Background Lore

The hamlet of Briar Ford sits beside an old causeway and a black-water marsh that once fed a mill now long abandoned. In recent nights, livestock have vanished, travel has stalled, and one survivor swears the marsh itself is moving. The villagers do not know that an injured predator has taken refuge beneath the ruined mill and that someone in the village has been quietly feeding it to keep it away from their own door.

What the World Knows

The village of Briar Ford is being terrorized by a marsh predator that has made its den in an abandoned mill. The party is hired to hunt it down, end the raids, and keep the hamlet from panicking. If they succeed, the roads will reopen and the village will breathe easier.
