The Third Fragment of Salt and Shadow
The Third Fragment of Salt and Shadow
“Two towns, one island, and a treasure map that keeps getting one step harder to follow.”
— Hook · retrieve
“You already have two pieces of an old treasure map, and the next clue lies somewhere on the next island. The island has two small towns, a long memory, and more than one person who would rather keep the past buried than let strangers dig it up. Find the next piece before the wrong hands do, and the whole route may finally open.”
— Hook · retrieve
A rain-dark harbor welcomes the party between two islands of light: one town's lamps glowing on a sheltered bay, the other's lanterns blinking from a cliff road above. A local guide or anxious seller confirms the same rumor from both shores, the next map piece is on this island, but nobody in either town talks about it openly. Before nightfall, the party is already being watched by men who know exactly why strangers would come ashore with old parchment in their bags.
Mara Venn
Mara Venn meets the party at the dock with a practical warning and just enough information to start the hunt. She does not explain the deeper history, only that the island's two towns each hold part of the answer and that asking in the wrong place will draw unwanted attention.
Rumours
d5 · table- 01The next fragment is sealed in a place only the tide can reveal.
- 02One town's chapel keeper knows a tune that opens an old harbor lock.
- 03The rival captain has already paid someone in both towns to watch the docks.
- 04The island founders hid their greatest shame where the festival lanterns shine brightest.
- 05A fisherman found a brass key in a net and sold it before anyone asked what it fit.
If the party fails, the rival crew gains the route, the towns turn suspicious or hostile, and the treasure trail may be lost under the sea before anyone can reach it.
Background Lore
Long ago, a chain of navigational clues was split among smugglers, scholars, and ship captains who feared one another more than the sea itself. The next fragment was hidden on a nearby island where two small harbor towns now share an uneasy dependence on the same lighthouse, the same ferry, and the same old legends about a vanished civic benefactor. The party arrives with two pieces of a larger map and enough rumor to know the next piece is somewhere on the island, but not enough to know who is guarding it, why it matters, or how many people will move to stop it once they start asking the right questions.
The party arrives on an island with two rival towns and a rumor of a hidden relic tied to old sea routes. By following clues, earning trust, and outmaneuvering smugglers and a competing treasure hunter, they discover where the next map piece has been concealed and recover it before their enemies can.
