The Opening

A ruined caravan hunter collapses at Dawnvale’s gates, coughing saltwater onto the stones as he whispers of fish-men dragging villagers beneath the desert. Archmage Cindreth sends you to the Verulana Sandsultans, where the Mirage Oasis is already rising under brackish waves. Recover the Sigil of Tide before the oasis becomes a doorway to the deep.

Set the Scene

At dusk, the gates of Dawnvale glow red beneath a sinking sun. A caravan hunter stumbles across the threshold with salt dried white along his lips, one hand clamped over a ragged wound. Behind him, the road gleams with a thin trail of seawater that should not exist in the desert. When he says that villagers are being dragged beneath the sands, Archmage Cindreth calls for the party and places a map of the Verulana routes on the table. The ink begins to run as a drop of brine falls from the hunter’s sleeve.

Stakes

If the breach remains open, the Mirage Oasis will drown beneath brackish planar water, its wells will become toxic, and the Verulana trade network will fracture. The kraken cult will gain a stable passage into the desert, while the stolen Sigil will help its allies locate or corrupt the remaining fragments. Success preserves a vital settlement, strengthens the Sandsultans’ alliance with Dawnvale, and gives the party the first reliable lead toward the full Sigil of Tide.

Ticking Clock·The breach worsens with every major delay. By the third night after the caravan ambush, the Mirage Oasis’s lower streets are submerged. By the fourth night, the Sunken Altar can no longer contain the planar current and the oasis begins to collapse into a permanent tidal gate.

Background Lore

Long before the Verulana caravans mapped the desert passes, the Mirage Oasis was built above a buried temple dedicated to the meeting of river, rain, and sea. Its priests guarded the Sigil of Tide, a crystalline fragment capable of sealing planar breaches where elemental waters crossed into the mortal world. Now a fracture beneath the oasis has drawn brackish currents from a hostile plane, turning wells salty, raising drowned dead, and allowing merrow, sahuagin, and a kraken cult to seize the sunken altar. Archmage Cindreth has learned that the disturbance is connected to a wider search for the Sigils of Tide, and has urged the party to recover this fragment before the breach widens.

What the World Knows

The party travels from Dawnvale to the Mirage Oasis at the request of Archmage Cindreth and Sultan Sahira Dawnwind. A planar breach beneath the oasis has brought tidal horrors into the desert, while merrow, sahuagin, and a kraken cultist defend an ancient submerged temple. The heroes must reach the Sunken Altar of the Tide, stop the flooding, and reclaim the Sigil of Tide before the oasis and its caravan routes are lost.
