Set the Scene

At dusk, Sister Ilya Venn leads the party through a cemetery where every grave on the west side has been opened from below. No tools lie nearby, no footprints cross the mud, and the coffin-lids are stacked neatly beside each empty plot as if placed by careful hands.

In Asthalea's western frontier, burial rites are old, local, and fiercely protected. Families carve names into shale markers and leave iron nails in the earth so the dead stay put. On the same windless night each season, the oldest graveyards have begun to empty, as if something beneath the soil is calling the corpses home.

Graveyards across the west have been found empty on the same night, with coffins opened and bodies missing. The church and local magistrate want the cause found before fear spreads, and the party is hired to investigate the desecrations and stop whoever is stealing the dead.
